KTP auditing tool development

The recent Energy Performance in Buildings Directive regulations have increased awareness of energy issues and created a greater demand for energy and environmental assessments. These assessments provide information which can be used to reduce the carbon emissions of the building. The initial data collection stage is a time consuming process. Carbon Descent have partnered with London South Bank University to develop software that will streamline this process.

The output from this Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) project will assist assessors when collecting onsite data about energy usage, water consumption and waste production. The handheld tool can manage different types of audit, from the simpler mini-audit where quick wins are identified, tocomplete surveys analysing the buildings equipment and services more detailed.

The software will run on a hand held device only slightly larger than a PDA. The software will facilitate data entry in a way that suits the type of audit, building and organisation as well as the chosen route around the site. A main benefit of the software is that the assessor only needs to enter the data once producing faster and more accurate results.

Once back in the office, the survey data will be uploaded into a central database where it can be analysed by the assessor using standard industry carbon calculation models. A reporting facility will enable the assessor to make recommendations and tailor the results for the customer. The information provided by the software tool can then also be formatted for inclusion within or form the basis of the Building Log Book.
