SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT
Although four out of five primary school children in London live within two miles of their school, over a third are driven to school by car.*
The level of traffic generated by the school run has a high impact on local air quality and road safety. While many parents are concerned about the security of their children while on public transport, walking or cycling, there are solutions that avoid excessive use of cars.
It is important to raise awareness of sustainable transport issues at an early age, to ensure that good habits are developed for later life. This is consistent with the aim of the European Eco-Schools programme, to make environmental awareness and action an intrinsic part of school life for both pupils and staff.
